WPS SHARES MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT PROGRAM WITH STATE EDUCATORS
Westminster Public Schools' “Less Stress with WPS” campaign took the road last month to help educators across the state battle mental health challenges. The Colorado Department of Education invited Project Aware team members. Lacey Mahleres and Jordan Terhaar will make a presentation at the “Landscape of Wellbeing and Belonging” conference in Colorado Springs.
WPS was one of just seven organizations to receive the Project Aware grant to create support programs for its students and staff.
The team shared details of its “Four R’s” program focusing on recognizing and supporting people going through trauma. The four R’s are:
• Realizing
• Recognizing
• Responding
• Resisting Re-traumatization
“While we still have a long way to go, the stigma surrounding mental health is diminishing, and this means that awareness of the need for universal support for wellbeing and belonging is increasing.” said Melissa Sandoval, the WPS Director of Wellness.” Mental health challenges are much more common than many people realize, and the pandemic brought this to light.”
WPS has created a Less Stress with WPS website for students, families, and staff that makes resources available to those who believe they might need help.
